For passengers under the age of 6 years, or 40 lbs, the law in Alberta requires that an appropriate child safety seat be used, correctly installed and the child properly secured in the seat.
A rear-facing child safety seat needs to be used until the child is at least 2 years of age or has reached the manufactures maximum weight or height limit. Once the child has passed the rear-facing child safety seat or 2 years of age, they should remain in a forward-facing car seat until they have reached the manufactures maximum weight or height limit.
Although not provincially regulated in Alberta, booster seats are generally recommended for all children after they have outgrown their forward-facing car seats. Typically, a vehicle’s seat belt is designed to fit an adults body and will not properly fit a child’s body. Therefore, in order to reduce the risk of serious injuries, a booster seat is recommended.
In addition to proper car seat safety, it is recommended that all children under the age of 13 years old be seated in the backseat of the vehicle, regardless of whether they are in booster seats.
Failure to comply with Alberta car seat safety laws may result in a fine as well as increases to your car insurance premiums.
