Understanding Your Driving Record

Your Driving Record is one of the most important factors insurance companies use when determining your auto insurance rates. In Alberta, insurers review a driver’s history to assess risk and calculate premiums.

Alberta drivers can easily access their Driving Record by requesting a driver abstract, which is an official printed summary of a person’s driving history. This document includes important details such as merit and demerit points, traffic convictions, and license suspensions.

Understanding your Driving Record can help you better manage your insurance costs and ensure your driving history is accurate.

Types of Driving Records Available in Alberta

Drivers in Alberta can request one of two types of Driving Record abstracts:

These abstracts can be requested for different reporting periods, typically covering 3, 5, or 10 years of driving history.

What Information Appears on a Driving Record?

Standard Driver Abstract includes important personal and licensing details, such as:

  • Driver identification information (height, weight, and gender)
  • Current statusof the driver’s license
  • Any license conditions or restrictions
  • Traffic convictions
  • Demerit points
  • License suspensions

Commercial Driver Abstract includes most of the same information but also provides details about Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) inspections.

Reviewing your Driving Record regularly can help you understand how your driving history may affect your insurance premiums.

What a Driving Record Does Not Show

It is important to note that a Driving Record abstract does not confirm a driver’s total driving experience or the original date when the driver’s license was first issued.

If you notice an error or incorrect information on your Driving Record, you should contact the Alberta Ministry of Transportation immediately to request corrections.

Keeping your Driving Record accurate helps ensure that your insurance premiums reflect your actual driving history.

How to Request Your Driving Record in Alberta

Drivers can obtain their Driving Record abstract by visiting a Service Alberta registry office in person.

To request a driving record, you will need:

  • Valid photo identification
  • A completed driver abstract application form
  • Payment of the applicable fees

If you are currently outside Alberta, you can still request your Driving Record by submitting a notarized request form and paying the required fees.
